RIP SOS (Basic Troubleshooting Guide)

RIP-Queue Workflow
Problem Possible Cause Things to Try
Job does not move on to print stage
  • Status = Wait for media
  • Status = Busy
  • Status = On Hold
  • Make sure the page size is large enough to fit the image, marks, tiling overlap, and placement.
  • Make sure the paper type for the job matches the current settings for the printer in the queue.
  • Make sure the job is not Busy in Job Editor.
  • Select the job and click the Hold button.
Job waits to print
  • Hold setting in workflow
  • Incorrect placement settings
  • Edit settings in quickset(s) to remove Hold for Operator.
  • Change placement settings so jobs print automatically.

Job does not wait to print
  • No hold setting in workflow
  • Incorrect placement settings
  • Edit settings in quickset(s) to include Hold for Operator.
  • Change placement settings so it does not automatically print.
Queue will not re-open after Server.exe error
  • No hold setting in workflow
  • Incorrect placement settings
  • Close the RIP-Queue and browse to the Work folder for the print queue that had the job(s) in process, and then delete all files associated with that job.
  • Look for files stuck in the Input\printer folder
PostScript RIP
Problem Possible Cause Things to Try
RIP Error
  • Font missing from Font Manager
  • Bad font in Font Manager
  • Not enough memory (RAM or hard drive space)
  • Add the fonts needed into the Font Manager.
  • Remove any bad fonts from the Font Manager.
  • Make sure there is at least 10 GB free on all hard drives.
  • Make sure there is at least 1 GB RAM per CPU.
Image did not rip correctly
  • Transparency effect in image causing issues during rip
  • Missing elements or incorrect rendering
  • Drop shadow rendered incorrectly
  • Turn on transparency in the PostScript RIP configuration dialog.
  • Turn on CCADL in the PostScript RIP configuration dialog.
  • Adjust the MAXFLAT and MINFLAT settings in the PostScript RIP configuration dialog.
  • Turn on Two stage Processing or Antialiasing in the quickset advanced options.
  • Export original file as a different file type (.eps.ps.pdf).
Only one RIP opens at a time
  • Only one CPU in the system
  • Only one RIP is enabled in the RIP-Queue options
  • Verify that the system has 2 physical processors installed and working properly (not hyperthreading).
  • Enable 2nd RIP in General Settings options in RIP-Queue.
Printer
Problem Possible Cause Things to Try
Print error in the RIP-Queue Console window and/or Print error status for the job in the buffer
  • Printer not physically connected
  • TCP/IP address for the printer incorrect
  • Printer is offline or not ready
  • Something on the PC or in the network is blocking the port
  • USB port drivers not installed
  • USB cable length over 6 feet
  • Check physical connection and power connection.
  • Verify that the IP address used is correct and properly assigned to that printer and not being used by any other device on the network (use Ping in DOS).
  • Verify that the printer is online and ready (may need to reset the printer, or turn power off and on again to clear any data stuck in the buffers).
  • May need to reset any network devices in the path (hubs or switches).
  • May need to remove any Windows based printer drivers on the same PC to unblock the port
  • Use a 6 foot USB cable, no longer than 10 foot.
  • Ensure the proper data type or port name is selected for TCP/IP printers.
RIP-Queue shows the job printing or printed correctly, but the printer never printed
  • TCP/IP address for the printer is incorrect
  • Printer received data, but did not print
  • Incorrect port settings
  • More than one device on the network using that IP address
  • Verify that the IP address used is correct and properly assigned to that printer and not being used by any other device on the network (use Ping in DOS).
  • May need to reset the printer or any network devices.
  • Verify that the port settings are correct (Raw ~0, or Port9100)
  • If the printer received data but did not print, and a reset did not fix the issue then, check the rip settings against the printer setup. For example, make sure you are sending Dye data to a printer that has Dye ink installed.
  • Make sure you’ve updated the firmware on your printer, especially on HP5000/5500 printers.

Cannot see SCSI printer in port config
  • Hardware issues, such as card
  • O/S issues check device mgr.
  • Need updated Card drivers
  • Onyx has the wrong ID #
  • Verify all connections are good and that the cable has no damage.
  • Verify that the SCSI Bios sees the cards and printer.
  • Verify that Windows sees the printer in device manager, often shows as 1394 generic scsi printer. Disable the 1394 generic scsi pirnter.
  • Make sure the Aspi layer is installed and up-to-date.
Cutters
Problem Possible Cause Things to Try
Unable to select the proper cutter in the RIP-Queue
  • Cutter is not listed as an option to choose
  • Contour Cutting isn’t enabled on the key
  • Cutter is supported as part of a larger group (Graphtec Cutter, includes several devices).
  • Make sure support for Contour Cutting is enabled on the key.
Unable to select the proper cutter in the Cut-Server interface
  • Cutter is not listed as an option to choose
  • Cutter is supported under the name of a different device.
  • Cutter not supported at this time (check with ONYX).
Failed to create a cut file
  • Cut contour not enabled in workflow
  • Verify the Quicksets are using the right Cutter Path Prefix.
  • Verify that a cutter has been selected in the RIP-Queue Placement Setup.
  • Verify that the print reached 100% in RIP-Queue
Failed to create a proper cut path in Cut-Server.
  • Cutter Path Prefix is incorrect or does not match the image creation
  • Image was created incorrectly
  • PostScript or Quickset settings incorrectly set up
  • Verify that the Cutter Path Prefix used in the Quickset matches the Spot color used to create the cut path in the image.
  • Verify that the cut path was created with a Named Spot color in CMYK color space. (RGB and process colors will not work).
  • Verify that neither Two Stage Processing nor Antialiasing are enabled.
  • Verify that a path (and only a path – no fill) was used to create the cut path – Cut-Server 2.0 only
  • Verify that the cut path doesn’t cross or touch the bounding box. Verify that the cut path is on its own layer, and that this layer is placed on top of all others.
Unable to detect alignment marks
  • Marks printed too close to media edges
  • Image printed too small to get the alignment marks
  • Print image on media in such a way that there is at least 2-3” white space between the alignment marks and the media edges.
  • Print image no smaller than 10” square to provide enough room for alignment marks.
  • Make sure media is loaded straight on the cutter.
  • Make sure the cutter’s outer pinch rollers are outside alignment marks.
Unable to communicate with the cutter or cutter does not respond.
  • Incorrect port setup
  • Other software or drivers blocking use
  • Load proper USB drivers, or check the Com port settings to ensure the correct setup is used.
  • For serial connections, use a cable approved by the cutter manufacturer.
  • Remove any other software or drivers that may be interfering.
  • Use Port9100 when sending data TCP/IP to Roland Cutters.
Cut accuracy
  • Incorrect alignment when setting up the material in the cutter
  • Incorrect adjustments
  • Follow cutter specific instructions when setting up to cut, and make sure visual alignment is accurate if not using a sensor.
  • Adjust pressure, speed, and media feed compensation.
  • Perform a sensor offset adjustment for cutters that support it (Summa, Graphtec, etc.)
Mac to PC Connectivity
Problem Possible Cause Things to Try
Unable to send files from the MAC to rip on the PC.
  • Network connectivity in general
  • O/S incompatibility
  • Permissions and Shares
  • Contact your IT manager to verify connections.
  • O/S on the PC should be Win XP Pro if using O/S X, or Win 2K server, if using O/S 9 on the Mac.
  • Use PCMacLan (if using OS 9) or other to provide connectivity.
  • Verify that the Mac and PC Shares have full permissions enabled.
Unable to print from the Mac to PC via the Virtual Printer.
  • Using Mac O/S 9.2.2
  • Using incorrect PPD files
  • Long Share names
  • Use a newer Mac O/S such as O/SX.
  • Use the PPD files from the Mac directory in ONYX (ONYX Graphics\PosterShop\server\PPD\Mac)
  • Verify that the Virtual printer share name is 12 characters or less.
  • Use Samba, or IP printing connections (see white papers for more info).
Color
Problem Possible Cause Things to Try
Unexpected color shift (overall green or red tint)
  • Incorrect Input ICC profiles
  • Incorrect Media selection
  • Physical print issue, like print head failure
  • Need to recalibrate or relinearize to account for environmental or material changes
  • Verify that the Input ICC profiles used to rip the image are the same color space the image was created in.
  • Verify that the Ink and Media selections used to rip the image are the correct setting for the material used.
  • Verify that the printer and print heads are functioning properly.
  • Recalibrate by printing a linearization and reading in with a densitometer (in Media Manager).
  • Verify that you’re selecting a resolution/dot pattern that has been profiled.
Pantone Accuracy
  • Spot color table not enabled
  • Need to recalibrate or relinearize to account for environmental or material changes
  • Desired color is out of gamut
  • Enable the Spot color replacement table in Quicksets.
  • Recalibrate by printing a linearization and reading in with a densitometer (in Media Manager).
  • If desired Spot color or Pantone is out of gamut for that specific Printer, Ink, and Media to hit, then the only option is to choose a different Spot color or a different media combination.
Job Editor
Problem Possible Cause Things to Try
Image is grainy or appears low-resolution
  • Image Preview not applied
  • Set the appropriate size and magnification in the Preview and size tab then press the Apply button. The image will be processed and should display well.
Color replacement not applied properly
  • Incorrect order of operations, need to apply profiles first
  • The proper order is to choose media and input ICC, then size, and then click the Apply button. Then color correct and press the Apply button again.
Unable to size image larger than page dimensions
  • Page size setting is too small
  • Tiling is not enabled
  • Change the page size or print area reduction in the Preview and Size tab. Select a larger page size.
  • In the Tiling tab, check the box to Enable Tiling, and then set up a default or custom tile size.
